The Insanity of Scrolling and Documenting Instead of Living: A Call to Reclaim Presence.

In our hyperconnected age, reality slips through our fingers. More and more, we find ourselves pulled away from the immediacy of our own lives—our bodies, our sensations, our present moments. Instead, we dash to document what we’re experiencing, racing to share it with the “cloud,” that abstract space where proof of our aliveness is measured in clicks, likes, and fleeting digital applause.

This compulsion has become routine: a concert, a dinner with friends, a beautiful sunset—before we have even felt the moment's fullness, our phones are out, cameras pointed. The need to show others that we are having an experience replaces the experience itself. In many ways, this is a pure example of collective insanity. We trade what is real and embodied for a digital shadow.

That is why I keep pushing men to put down their phones and come together—literally—in the same room, on massage tables, to reconnect with themselves and each other. Yesterday, I sent out an email blast to over 50 men. From my side, about 33 opened it. Only one responded. He lives just outside DC, so he couldn't join me in person this morning. But we still had a great conversation. He’s an amazingly creative digital musician who plays to stadiums of fans. Yet, as he described, instead of dancing with friends, most people at his shows stand still, holding their phones aloft to capture content for later. Another example of how we are losing what it means to be truly alive, to be human, to have experiences just for the joy of them.

Why aren’t eight men on their way to my studio right now, ready to experience two hours of guided, conscious, responsible, stimulating, and relaxing touch? It saddens me. But I will keep trying. I will keep shouting into the wind, urging men to put their phones down and stop scrolling through life. Real connection is still possible. The present moment is still waiting for us, if only we choose to step into it—together.
