INTOUCHMEN, IT'S BACK TO SCHOOL!

Massage between consenting adults is a diverse and expansive art, offering profound healing in many forms—from relaxation and therapeutic touch to sensual and erotic exploration. The world of massage is vast, with countless descriptions and modalities. Many terms are technical yet vague, some are invented or used inconsistently, and others are simply marketing language created for spa menus.
After more than 20 years of exploring this craft with men, I’ve seen a lot of mixed messages, misused terminology, and a tendency to complicate what is, at its core, a simple and intuitive art. With that in mind, I’d like to share a few straightforward distinctions to help you confidently navigate the world of man-for-man touch.
Let’s begin with an important distinction: massage styles versus modalities.
Massage styles refer to the general approach or category of massage you’re choosing to receive. I break these down into four main types, plus a fifth option for sessions that blend elements of multiple styles.
MASSAGE STYLE OVERVIEW:
Therapeutic Massage: This style is focused on addressing a specific physical issue, often in a physical therapy context rather than as a traditional full-body table massage. The touch is one-directional and targets areas such as injuries or chronic tension. For example: focused work on tendonitis.
Relaxation Massage: This style focuses on deeply relaxing the body and calming the nervous system. The touch is one-directional and intentionally soothing, with no sensual or erotic stimulation beyond your body’s natural, involuntary responses.
Sensual Massage: This style blends deep relaxation with gentle stimulation of both the physical and sensual aspects of the body and nervous system. The touch is one-directional and may include focused attention on erogenous zones, always guided by comfort and consent.
Erotic Massage: This style is designed to relax and stimulate the physical, sensual, and erotic dimensions of the body and nervous system. The touch may be one-directional or mutual, and often includes focused attention on erogenous zones. Because erotic massage can involve a range of experiences from simple touch to penetration with an inherent power dynamic between giver and receiver, it always requires enthusiastic, ongoing consent from both parties.
Remember that every massage style—therapeutic, relaxation, sensual, or erotic—involves an inherent power dynamic between giver and receiver. That’s why unanimous, ongoing consent is fundamental to any shared touch experience between men. Open, honest dialogue and mutual respect ensure that every session is safe, affirming, and truly enjoyable for everyone involved.
Up next, I’ll be diving into massage modalities—like Swedish, deep tissue, cranio/sacral, and lomi lomi—so stay tuned!
